Why You Should Experiment… A LOT!
The only way you’ll figure out stuff most of the time is to experiment. To try.
Most people are scared of making mistakes…
Looking stupid…
Putting out effort with no / little return…
Wasting money…
Wasting time…
Not getting a perfect result on the first try.
So that means most scared people never try much of anything.
Or, when they do finally try something, they use their imperfect results to justify the idea that trying new things isn’t a good idea.
I remember the first time I tried to publish a full motion / direct-to-camera video back in 2004 using an flv file with a swf player… and deliver that video to an audience that was overwhelmingly on dial-up Internet connections.
It literally took me an entire 50-hour week to figure it out.
I solved the mechanics, but the video I produced kinda sucked (I spent all my time figuring out the tech and then just winged it on the video content).
When the response was underwhelming I could have said, “Well that experiment was a failure… don’t need to do that again!”
But I didn’t. In fact, that “failure” only encouraged me because now I knew how to do a video and deliver it over dial-up… which virtually nobody else knew how to get done.
The next experiment was how to create a video people would want to watch… which I eventually figured out… and the rest, as they say, is history.
You gotta try stuff… experiment… and not judge the results as success or failure.
When I try something new, I always ask a series of questions:
- What happened?
- What did I learn?
- What were other people’s reactions?
- How can I use this?
- How can I apply this to something I already know?
- How can I use this to differentiate myself?
- How can I use this to get better at what I’m already doing?
Sometimes the answers result in a small tweak (like a shift in camera angle)… sometimes the answers lead to a tectonic shift in my business (like Funnel Scripts).
The point is, you can’t be afraid to experiment. You just need to “manage risk” when it comes to time and money. (I hate to waste money, but hey, who doesn’t?)
Now that doesn’t mean you become a professional “dabbler” where you constantly try stuff (like a foodie at the buffet) and never commit to anything.
Those kinds of people never accomplish much besides evolving into an insufferable know-it-all.
When you experiment, you might do it as play or having fun, but when you sit down to do that analysis and ask yourself the above questions, that’s when you need to get focused like a serious scientist.
In the end, all great breakthroughs start out as experiments… even accidents (think Post-it Notes from 3M).
But you can’t have a breakthrough unless you’re willing to consistently experiment and risk “failure.”
