Cogitation.
There’s a word you don’t hear much anymore.
Here’s the definition.
Cogitate: Think deeply about something; meditate or reflect.
“He stroked his beard and retired to cogitate”
People used to think things through. People used to sit down and think about the ramifications of a certain course of action, line of thinking, or strategy.
People used to look before they leaped.
Now. Not so much. It’s all about “ready, fire, aim” and Twitter feeds and news feeds and a constant, never-ending stream of information coming our way.
There’s no time to think anymore. Only time to react.
Problem is, if you only react, you’re actually at the mercy of OTHER people…. people who have an agenda…. people who have a PLAN that involves YOU not thinking for yourself long enough to make a decision for yourself.
Don’t believe me?
What about product launches that make huge promises with a deadline only 1 day away?
Or news organizations that stoke the flames of a story, especially a controversial story?
Or politicians with an agenda using terror… or finances… or scandal… or tragedy to make you react a certain way without time to think?
We all need to take some quiet time each day to cogitate. Ten minutes will do. Think about your business, where you’re going, how you’re getting there and the actions you need to take.
Build the habit of thinking for yourself. Turn off the TV. Get off Facebook. Get quiet.
You’ll be amazed at the focus it creates in just a few minutes a day.
