Most of us who do stuff online are incredibly creative.
We’re coaches, we’re authors, we’re software developers.
We do all these things, and we define ourselves as that thing.
- “I’m a coach.”
- “I’m a graphic designer.”
- “I’m a software developer.”
- “I’m an author.”
We often get more juice out of doing the thing than we do about selling our thing.
Does this sound familiar?
You wrote your book or developed your software, and you felt this sense of accomplishment:
“I’m done!”
And then you waited for hordes of people to pay you for your amazing “thing” you created.
But they didn’t come.
What’s Wrong?
It’s hard to hear this, but you’re cheating people (and yourself).
When you have a message to share with the world, but you don’t get it out there and market it, you’re cheating people of the changed life they could have.
I have a really good friend of mine who’s a classic example.
She’s very knowledgeable about what she does, and she’s really focused on improving her skill in her area.
But she has neglected the marketing, so most people either don’t know who she is or don’t understand the value she can give.
So, they don’t get the value they could get from her.
And nobody spends money with her.
This is where I see creative people get super unhappy because they’ve got all this value…
But they feel cheated by the world because nobody’s spending money and buying their stuff.
Well, the reason they’re not buying your stuff is because you’ve got to become a marketer who does what you do.
Who Are You?
If you’re an author, if you write books in a certain area, then you need to stop identifying as being an “author!”
You need to start identifying yourself as a “marketer who is also an author.”
- If you’re a coach and you teach people how to do Facebook advertising, you need to become a marketer who coaches people in Facebook advertising.
- If it’s marriage counseling, then you are a marketer who specializes in marriage counseling.
- If you make your living as an artist, then you’re a great marketer who’s an artist.
That’s the only way you’re going to be able to spread your message, reap the rewards you deserve, and help the world.
Stop identifying as whatever you think you are and redefine yourself as a marketer who does what you do.
If you don’t do that, you will forever:
- Cheat the world of the value you could bring;
- Cheat yourself;
- Cheat your family;
- Cheat your bank account!
The Message
Please, don’t get all huffy and say, “Oh Jim, you’re saying all my stuff should just be about making money.”
No, a great marketer focuses on sharing the message of how their product or service solves problems and satisfies desires.
They make money as a reward for being amazing at sharing the message.
Bottom Line
- Stop thinking of yourself as whatever you think you are.
- Think of yourself as a marketer who does what you do.
- Get great at selling.
- Get great at helping people see value.
It will change your life, the life of your family, and the lives of those you serve.
That’s how you’ll have the impact you want to have.
The only way it’s going to happen is to become awesome at marketing.
