Do you know what this colloquial phrase means?
If you’re familiar with the American culture, you may have heard this!
It means:
You need to be loyal to the people who’ve been with you since the beginning.
It is a phrase with simple roots.
It comes from the idea that if someone brings you to a dance, you’re supposed to dance with the person who brought you.
You don’t get someone to take you to the dance and then wander off and leave them alone as you dance with other people!
And this can apply to your business, too!
It’s a reminder of the loyalty of your team and family.
It’s a message we all need to hear in good times and in bad!
When you’re stressed out about your business, you must remember who’s been in your corner this whole time!
When you’re going gangbusters and the good times are rolling in, you need to remain loyal to those who got you where you are!
You need to treat your team right in good times and in bad (don’t be a fair-weather friend)!
In a way, it’s similar to how too much alcohol or money will inevitably reveal someone’s true character. Drunks, or people who suddenly come into a lot of money, tend to either act very loving and generous or like complete asshats.
We all must ensure we’re treating the people who have been on your team the right way over the short and long haul.
It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about your family, business partner, or your spouse.
Avoid the temptation to think you’d be better off “if only” you were in business with this person… or things would be so much easier if I went off and was in a relationship with that person.
Truth is, if you ran off and left the people who’ve been with you all along, the people you ran to would eventually leave you once they got what they wanted.
The Takeaway
Remember to dance with the one who brung you.
Be grateful for the people you have in your life, for your team, for those who constantly help you in good times and bad.
There are three MAJOR things I try to practice gratitude for daily:
- The people on your team;
- The fact that you’re alive and healthy;
- The fact that you get to change lives every day.
