“Courage is knowing what not to fear.” – Plato
Plato’s work has inspired many cultures for thousands of years. His wisdom has survived for generation through war, plague, pestilence, famine, and worse than what we’re dealing with now.
The big idea here is NOT that we need to be fearless in everything we do (that’s how you get eaten by a lion or run over by a beer truck)!
It means we need to know what’s worth being afraid of and what’s not. To be selective in which ideas we give power in our lives.
Here’s how I believe this applies to us and keeping life together during trying times:
We should all fear of the effects of the corona virus.
But, since we fear it, we must show courage in the face of it.
But the ways in which we demonstrate that courage may surprise you.
- Show courage through kindness in thought and deed.
- Practice patience with everyone you meet… NEWSFLASH! They’re going through this too.
- Check yourself when you want to lash out in frustration (especially in help desks and with support people).
- Don’t engage in the general discussions of how terrible things are (especially on social media).
- Extend yourself to help another, even if it’s inconvenient.
- Don’t worry about “stuff”… “stuff” has a way of taking care of itself.
You have food… you have power… you have water… you are better off than the majority of the world.
Show courage in the face of fear by controlling your actions and attitudes in these trying times.
Hey, before I forget…
Want to REALLY show courage? Go commit a random act of kindness today… share joy with someone else without any expectation of reward or recognition.
Doing this makes it easy for you to thrive, not just survive… and also makes it easy to avoid buying into the general psychosis that seems to pervade every aspect of life right now.
Be good to yourself and others today.
