Do you ever stop and think about how to turn your “to do” list into your “DONE” list?
I remember one time I was on a podcast about productivity, and the podcaster asked me an interesting question:
“What’s your number one tip for ACTUALLY getting stuff done?”
And I have a helpful answer. 😁
The Challenge
Most people create a to-do list for their task list and use a calendar only for appointments.
Then they try to do all their tasks between all the appointments they overload themselves with on their calendar.
I can tell you from my experience this doesn’t lead to the intended results.
When you’re trying to steal little productivity windows from in between your meetings, stuff just never gets done. (Look at your un-done to-do lists and let me know if I’m right or wrong.)
Most times, you just don’t get the items on your to-do list done. Why?
- Maybe you’re too tired;
- Maybe the task is too big for the amount of time you have;
- Maybe you’re in a bad mood;
- Maybe the stars aren’t aligned.
It really doesn’t matter what the reason is. All that matters is that at the end of the day/week/month, nothing is done… and your to-do list is probably larger than it was when you started!
The 1 Thing
Luckily, there is ONE thing you can change to turn “to do” into “done.”
- Take your to-do list and put each item onto your calendar as an appointment.
- Then, handle your appointments.
That’s it. That’s what I do!
I break things down into tasks, set each task as an appointment on my calendar, and then keep those appointments.
Doing that will help you get things done.
Conclusion
Turning “to do” into “done” is simpler than you might think.
The biggest SECRET I can share with you is to stop thinking of your to-do list and your calendar as independent things.
A to-do list and a calendar working together will help you take the actions you need to take.
If you want to turn “to-do” into “done,” schedule an appointment with yourself for that task. Then follow your schedule.
That’s how I turn “to do” into “done.”
