The #1 Story To Tell To Make More Sales

I started selling my first book online back in 1997. I struggled for years. In fact, I struggled for four years trying to sell my book. Then I went to a seminar and I listened to somebody who said, “You need to tell a story on your sales letter.” Actually, first, he taught what a sales letter was, then he said you need to tell a story on your sales letter. 

Now, I don’t know about you. But if somebody says, “Hey, tell a story.” It’s kind of hard to figure out which story to tell. But, I was desperate to get a result (more sales of my For Sale By Owner real estate book), so I gave it a try. The story I told increased my sales by 250%! What story did I tell? I’m going to tell you about that story and how I structured it in just a minute. 

So, here’s the tip for the #1 story to tell to make a LOT more sales. 

The number one best story that you can tell to immediately increase sales is your “origin” story. Why? Well, the story I ended up telling on that sales letter that increased sales 250% overnight was the story about how I went from having not one, but two houses I needed to sell without an agent. Oh, and I needed to sell them in 30 days, or I was not going to be able to take a job in Miami. 

But it gets worse (the story). I had just gotten married and was trying to not look like an idiot in front of my new wife. I shared all of the problems, all the trials, all the tribulations, all of the roadblocks – which every for sale by owner goes through. I then shared how I figured out how to sell both houses in less than 30 days and get to closing. What I shared was my origin story, though I didn’t realize it at the time. 

But, in hindsight, this was the most effective story I could tell. That story answers a whole bunch of questions really, really fast, including:

  • Why should I listen to you? 
  • Why are you selling the product?
  • Why should I buy this now instead of waiting?

By telling the story, you explain why it makes perfect sense for you to sell it, why you’re qualified, and why acting now makes total sense if they want to get the results you promise.

Origin story: the number one type of story you need to learn how to tell. You may have heard of the hero’s journey. To some degree, the origin story is the hero’s journey, but it’s a very specific type of hero’s journey.
