How to Cash-In with Changes In the Marketplace
Let me tell you a quick story about when I was getting started as a mortgage broker back in the early 90s.
Nobody gave me a chance of making it in a very tough business. In fact, I had to apply to 7 different companies just to get a job that paid 100% commission (and I harassed the crap out of the guy who eventually hired me so I’d stop calling him at home on the weekends).
I was actually very fortunate at that time because there was a major change in the marketplace when it came to FHA loans.
The way in which FHA mortgage insurance was calculated changed about 2 weeks before I got into the business. It was a very complicated calculation many people in the industry didn’t understand yet, let alone real estate agents.
So I put my algebra skills to use and figured out a way to make those calculations much faster. In fact, in about 1/10th of the time it took using the method the government recommended (the institution that actually insured the loans).
I then went out “on the road” and shared the worksheet I created for calculating the mortgage insurance premiums with every Realtor that I could find.
The result?
I was the first person to explain to real estate agents how to calculate these premiums in a way they could actually understand and use. Though not all of them gave me business, I was able to leverage this change in the market into an introduction.
By leveraging this change, I was able to get a break in the market. As a side benefit, nobody was asking me how long I’ve been in the mortgage business either. They saw me as a valuable resource and listened to what I had to say.
So, what’s the moral of the story?
Change online happens super-fast and that’s a good thing… if you leverage it to your advantage.
Go find something that’s changed, figure out how your target audience can benefit from that change, and go tell them about it.
Explain to them what the change means and how it ultimately benefits them or affects them.
Be the first person who helps them manage change… and they won’t ask you how long you’ve been in the business.
They will see you as a resource, just like those Realtors almost 30 years ago saw a 20-something kid as a resource… not as a newbie trying to break into the market.
If you’re an established player, leverage change by simply keeping people up to date on the changes in your industry and explain to them what the changes means to them.
They’ll see you as a go-to resource and someone they need to pay attention to even more because of the constant change in the marketplace (and the value you bring).
Change is your friend if you stay on top of it and explain to people what change means to them, their situation, and their lives.
Don’t run from change like most people do.
Welcome change and see it as an opportunity to serve others and help them get what they want… and you’ll get what you want in return.
One thing that never changes, however, are principles. This is especially true of principles in sales copy where your ability to persuade and motivate people to try, buy, click, or subscribe has everything to do with your success online.
