A Note From Jim

If You Want To Change Your Life This Year, Change This…

“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” – John Maxwell

What you do everyday matters.

“Success” is not some far off achievement, but is the result of your thoughts and actions up to this point in your life… no matter how you want to measure success.

Your daily routines determine your short term and long-term success.

  • What are you doing or NOT doing (consistently) every single day?
  • What’s the first thing you do every morning when you get up?
  • When do you start checking email?
  • When do you focus on tasks related to your long-term goals?
  • When do you exercise?
  • When do you eat?
  • What do you eat?
  • How much TV do you watch?
  • How much reading do you do to improve yourself every single day?
  • How much time do you take to think, reflect, and use your brain?

These are critical questions that reveal whether your daily routine is supporting you… or dooming you to a level where you’ll NEVER be happy with your life.

One of the things that people are tempted to do is to radically change their schedule and their routine to “mix things up.” This rarely works because most of your routine is operating at a subconscious level. You’re on autopilot (we all are). Not because you’re lazy, but because that’s how the brain works… especially in adults.

Because there’s so much information flying at us throughout the day, most of the things you think about are done on autopilot. Because there’s only so much bandwidth your brain can handle, you can’t radically change your routine and hope to make it “stick.”

That means instead of radically changing your routine, you should make small shifts that will help you to get the results you want. Here are some examples.

Need more time in your schedule? Use a DVR!

I’m not telling you not to watch TV because I know that’s not realistic. But I am telling you not to watch all the commercials. If you have two or three TV shows you really want to watch, and they’re each an hour long, that means each show contains at least 20 to 25 minutes worth of commercials. That means for every three hours of TV time, there’s actually an hour of spare time (3 x 20 minutes).

If you want to watch TV, use a DVR or use some other tool where you don’t have to watch commercials. Then, instead of finding another hour of TV to fill up the hour you just reclaimed, use that hour for something else, such as: working out; reading a book; marketing your business; or spending time with your family

Need to develop a skill? Don’t take your phone in the toilet with you!

If there’s a book you know you need to read, don’t take your phone in the bathroom with you! Instead, have a book sitting there waiting for you along with a notebook. Every time you sit down to do your business, instead of scrolling through social media on your phone, read the book and make some notes.

On average, you can get 20 minutes of reading done per day. Assuming seven days a week (because we don’t just poop on weekdays), that’s 140 minutes a week.

That’s over 7,280 minutes a year of reading.

Assuming 30 pages an hour (which is slower than average), that’s 3,640 pages a year, or 18+ books.

Imagine how different your life would be a year from now if you read 18 books while sitting on the can this year.

It’s a simple strategy that enables you to spend time improving yourself learning a new skill and sharpening your sword… instead of making the redheaded monkey rich because you’re spending 120+ hours a year sitting on the toilet looking at Facebook on your phone!

Here’s one more…

Wanna make money online? Don’t jump on your computer first thing in the morning!

Go for a walk with your phone so you can record your thoughts. (I use the Otter.ai app)

Or, sit with a blank piece of paper along with a pen and a cup of coffee.

In either scenario, ask yourself a simple question: How can I improve what I’m doing today?

And then sit there for as long as it takes to drink that cup of coffee (or walk) and start coming up with ideas on how you can improve your service, your marketing, your product, or your performance.

Whatever your current area of focus, spend time consciously deciding how you can get better at it!

I learned this trick from one of my mentors, Earl Nightingale. Though I never met him, he certainly was a mentor to me. This is one of the most invaluable suggestions I’ve ever gotten from someone.

Use the morning hours when everybody else is asleep to do your heavy thinking. Use that time with no distractions and then spend the rest of the day following through on your good ideas.

Bottom line: everything you currently have and are in life is a summary of your thoughts and deeds up until this point. If you’re not happy with where you are and where you’re going, you simply have to change your trajectory today with little tweaks to your thoughts and actions.

Over time, these tweaks will make a massive difference in every aspect of your life. But be warned! If you don’t change, you’re gonna keep getting what you’re getting now… Or worse!

Because there’s no such thing as maintaining the status quo. You’re either living and growing or you’re dying and deteriorating. There is no in between.

My best advice is to do exactly what the main character in Shawshank Redemption said, “Get busy living… or get busy dying!”

Peace
