“That’s Not A Real Book!”

Let me tell you a story about the time a lady told me very rudely that my book was not a real book.

This happened back in 1996 when I was a real estate agent in Williamsburg, VA.

I had developed a system for leveraging my unpublished book to help me get real estate clients, specifically For Sale By Owners.

I would send them a copy of my book and then call to ask if I could come take a look at their house. I had this down to a system!

In fact, it worked so well, I took 50 listings my first full year in real estate.

Here’s what happened:

One day I walked up to a house and knocked on the door.

The owner answered and I asked if she got the copy of my book in the mail.

She shocked me by saying, “That’s not a real book!” She was actually kind of rude.

I asked her what she meant, and she said, “It’s not a real book, because I looked for it on Amazon and it’s not there.”

After I got over my initial shock, I realized she just taught me a valuable lesson.

Here’s what I learned from this:

I realized it wasn’t whether I had a publisher or not that made my book “real” but rather 3 things:

1. The book is targeted and valuable for my ideal audience (avatar)

2. It has a profession cover and layout

3. It is published on Amazon

This is important because:

Most people think to have a “real book” you need an agent and or a publisher.

This is simply not true. If you can talk on a phone and do a basic edit (or hire someone), you can have a book faster than you ever dreamed possible. 

The moral of this story is clear: you don’t need an agent or a publisher to have a real book.

Here’s how you can use this step by step:

1.    List off 5 ways you could use a book to get more influence and impact with your audience.

2.    Even simpler, just think about how holding up a book with your name on it would influence how your customers (and competitors) look at you. For most people, their status massively increases instantly.
