Seven Hooks To Make Your Sales Stories Unforgettable

Seven Hooks To Make Your Sales Stories UnforgettableHere are seven of the best ways to make your sales story instantly capture people’s minds and get them to hang on your every word.

A Moment That Changed Your Life
The first one is basically to talk about a moment that changed your life. Typically, when you had to make a choice… it’s the fork in the road. I can think of one when I realized I was going to fail my last exam in college. I was tempted to cheat, but I made the choice not to. As a result, I’m here with you today.

Mystery
The second way is to create a feeling of mystery. You can use something as extreme as Jason’s Halloween hockey mask. Any type of person of mystery appearing out of nowhere, a mentor who appears, will do. It doesn’t have to be somebody or something evil.

Unusual Setting
The third way is to use an unusual setting. One of the ones that I use on a regular basis is the trailer park I used to live in. The reason for that is because most people have not lived in a trailer park. So, when I talk about when I lived in a trailer with a leaky roof and a bad electrical system, that sets the stage for “Oh my gosh, what the heck happened!” And that leads right into the next one, which is…

Introduce Something Scary Right Away
Use fear as the hook in your story. Something scary right away in your story might be a knock on the door in the middle of the night. “Let me tell you about the time at two o’clock in the morning there was pounding on the front door of my trailer. I went to the door and a sheriff’s deputy was standing there. Somebody down the street had been killed.” That definitely is a hook that makes you pay attention.

Make Your Character Likable
If you make your character likable, humble, and kind of “awe shucks. Everyone loves somebody who has overcome resistance and still remains true to themselves, their values, and their morals. A likable character can really stand out for people.

Introduce Gut Wrenching Conflict Immediately
One of the most impactful stories I ever told (where I hooked 5000 people and held them in the palm of my hands) began with a three-letter word; WAR.

That’s when I told the story about my son in law getting hit by an IED in Iraq.

Introduce An Enemy
Start the story off with somebody who is just bad. Someone who doesn’t like you. Someone who has betrayed you. Someone who has done you wrong. Use that person at the beginning of the hook.

“So let me tell you a quick story about the time I lost my best friend, went bankrupt, and nearly died from a heart condition… all in less than six months.”

True story.

So those are seven ways to hook people at the beginning of your story.

  1. Begin with a decision
  2. Begin with a feeling of mystery
  3. Use an unusual setting
  4. Have some sort of an event or something scary
  5. Make your character likable and relatable
  6. Introduce gut wrenching conflict right at the beginning
  7. Start with a person who doesn’t like you or has betrayed you

Case studies – Your #1 Way To Prove That What You Sell Works!

What is a case study? When some people hear the word case study, they probably think of a testimonial… but a case study is not a testimonial.

A testimonial is when somebody says good things about you or good things about your product. A case study is the customer’s journey with your product.

A case study follows the hero’s journey. People start out just humming along in life, then something bad happens, then things go from bad to worse, and they finally hit rock bottom.

Are case studies better than testimonials?
